The South Gippsland Citizens Advice Bureau and Visitor Information Centre collects and administers a range of personal information for a variety of reasons. The organisation is committed to protecting the privacy of personal information it collects, holds and administers. 

 

SGCAB recognises the essential right of individuals to have their information administered in ways which they would reasonably expect – protected on one hand, and made accessible to them on the other.  These values are reflected in and supported by our core values and philosophies and also reflected in our Privacy Policy, which is compliant with the Privacy Act 1988 

 

No details learnt from a client, or the fact that the client has contacted the agency, will be passed on to anyone outside the Bureau without permission of the client.

 

When handling personal information:

• The SGCAB will only collect information which is required for the organisations primary function of providing information 

• Ensure organisations, clients and volunteers are informed as to why we collect the information and how we administer the information.

• Store personal information securely, protecting it from unauthorised access

• And provide stakeholders, clients and volunteers with access to their own information and the right to seek its correction.

 

Negotiation, advocacy or referral of clients - whether seeking information from or giving information to a third party, all volunteers must respect a clients right to withhold permission for disclosure of personal information.

 

Exceptional Circumstances

Decisions to breach confidentiality must follow strictly established procedures and necessitates consultation with CisVic.

There are times when other responsibilities override the obligation to maintain privacy and confidentiality. In most cases these are situations where people are at risk of danger or harm.
